It's almost time for another Unveiling! Unveiling #2 features the astonishing art of Fiona Smyth! Don't miss it!

Here's the press release with all of the pertinent details:

~~~~~
The Ossington (61 Ossington Ave., Toronto)
Free admission
Followed by a soiree/party
ONE-NIGHT-ONLY!
"Unveiling #2"
Hosts Robert Dayton, Junior, and William A. Davison dramatically unveil the latest and never-before-seen (until this very eve) creation of artist Fiona Smyth, fresh from her intensely stunning show at the INDEXG Gallery (read review here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/the-true-north-plastic-and-dyspeptic/article1336915/ )
This is exciting as Fiona is a major seen and unseen influence on the current widespread drawing front. Fiona will also be selling the second issue of her art mag THE WILDING at this event!
Then they will be auctioning off this masterpiece with minimum bid starting at just 50 dollars !!! A low price for this amazing work by this important artist...
This will be followed by a soiree/party
ONE-NIGHT-ONLY! So if you want to bid and possibly attain this never-before-seen work by a great artist, you best attend! Even if you are broke like us, you do not want to miss this opportunity of UNVEILING....
"The Unveiling" is a new series of one-night-only soirees/exhibitions, held monthly (more or less) in the back room of The Ossington Bar, which playfully reinvent a romantic and antiquated concept - that of a single artist "unveiling" their latest creation for a gathering of colleagues, collectors, critics, and cultural elite. The series is organized and hosted by local artists/curators William A. Davison and Robert Dayton.
"It's largely an excuse to have a party once a month. We don't take anything too seriously and we fully recognize the potential for humor in this idea. We want to emphasize the fun factor." says spokesperson and series originator Davison. Indeed, for those who know the work of either Davison or Dayton, a humorous, subversive approach is not at all unexpected. "At the same time," Davison continues, "we have a deep respect for the work we will be presenting and we feel that this series will provide a highly unique, entertaining, and engaging way for some of our favorite artists to show their recent creations."
BIO
Fiona Smyth is a Toronto based artist exploring popular and alternative cultural icons and imagery. Smyth's work probes these timely societal, sometimes intense and always relevant topics with a sense of humour, wonder and catastrophic consequence. She also employs surrealist, abstractionist, spiritual, feminist and pro-sexual strategies to achieve her unique aesthetic. Her use of media also reflects this range of interest by using different formats from which to engage her audience including comics,
illustration, painting, animation, music covers, web-based art and her fabulous murals. Smyth has exhibited in Taichung /Taiwan, Venice/ Lido, Jeollabuk-Do/ South Korea, New York City, Winnipeg and most recently The Parkdale Gyre at INDEXG in Toronto.
Many thanks to Jubal Brown/Intervention Mondays and The Ossington!
~~~~~

I'm a big fan of Fiona's work and this is very exciting! I really want to see as many people as possible in the back room at The Ossington on Monday night as a show of support for Fiona who has done so much to liven up this city over the past...what? 15? 20 years?...a long time! Seriously, get your ass over to the Ossington this Monday! No excuses!

And hey! There will be snacks! And our generous host Jubal Brown will be happy to supply you with all the tasty beverages you love so much (at very reasonable prices)! Plus, Robert and I will no doubt have some ridiculous pseudo-Victorian get-ups on. You don't want to miss that!

See you Monday!

Definitions

As part of my Nov. 21st presentation at No Face, No Problem, I played a round of "Definitions" with the audience. The results are recorded here:

anal - to put your butt on each other.

apron - to leave slowly.

barf - to create or assemble from materials.

bog - to tidy or clean when one is supposed to be doing something more important.

dog - a pharmacological sleeping aid.

dream - noun: an object one acquires when in a state of turmoil. Falls from the ceiling.

duh - a thing smaller than a bread box.

emit - a special leotard-like strip which holds the toaster down before popping.

fear - too many Johnny's.

help! - is the feeling you get after a night of climbing trees and vomiting from the upper-most branches.

hotdog - adverb: swiftly, quickly and calmly.

kittens - verb: thinking with your eyes open while sleeping.

lugubrious - _____ (blank).

magnify - a great anticlimax.

oink - a drink that comes from a cow's udder.

oversion - not after the best before date.

poo - refers to the battle in 1893 in the fields of Archubacht. Colloquially means to burn diamonds in April.

redemption - red liquid in the body.

sebaceous - a vessel used for nice wine.

sexy - a large tree grown for its strong wood.

sheepish - what hangs lightly.

sick - a state of non-abrasive wonderment resulting in unexplored emotion.

thing - a form which transcends all living matter.

tiger - is the best thing that came out of 1992.

time - to simmer forcefully.

tintinnabulation - noun: sort of like an expensive thing you could buy, like a nice thing, only it's not so great.

yet - an obsolete currency.

_____ (blank) - a murky, deserted place.

In the game of "Definitions" each player writes a single word on the inside of a folded piece of paper. The slips of paper are then passed around the circle, or shuffled and redistributed, and each player then writes a "definition" (in the style of a dictionary definition but funny, serious, dramatic, poetic, absurd, stupid, whatever) on the outside of the folded piece of paper (without looking at the word inside, of course!). The slips are then unfolded and read out loud to the group.

The above definitions will be added to our "Recordist Lexicon" which we started back in the late 90's as part of IBRI's weekly open meeting series (IBRI = the International Bureau of Recordist Investigation, 1994 - 2004).

Unfortunately, I was not able to record the names of all of the participants. If you were there and would like to be credited just send me an email - davison(at)recordism(dot)com. A partial list of participants (the few people I knew and remember being there): Filip Anton, John Barlow, Marc Bell, Mark Connery, Jesjit Gill, Anna May Henry, Graham Hollings, Laura McCoy, Jon McCurley, Brian Random, Nicole Turok.

Drawing tonight!

Sorry I haven't been able to organize a drawing party this month, our recent travels resulted in a huge backlog of work which I've been wading through over the past week. We'll try to get back on the drawing party thing next month.

In the meantime, we will be at The Ossington tonight for Robert Dayton's "Feelings" DJ set and while we're there we will likely do some drawing. So come on out, say hi and sit in on the drawing if you like!
